Luisa Todi (1753-1833), the celebrated opera singer, was a citizen of Setubal and her memorial monument now stands in front of the Civil Governor’s building in the thoroughfare bearing her name. It was inaugurated in 1933 in a different location and subsequently moved; the monument was designed by Abel Pascoal and sculpted by Leopoldo de Almeida. Luisa became so prominent in Europe that the 1790/1791 season was known in Italy as ‘Todi’s Year’ but, when she returned to Portugal in 1793, she required special authorization to follow her career as women were forbidden to perform in public.
