The prosperity brought by the paper factory, which was opened in 1716 and is still operating, is apparent in Lousã’s fine 18th century houses. These include the Palácio dos Salazares in the Rua Viscondesa do Espinhal, now a hotel, and the Almeida Serra house with its coat of arms and baroque style windows. The Misericórdia Chapel in the Rua do Commércio dates from 1568 and has an attractive Renaissance portal. Other features, amongst many, are the tile panels by Jorge Colaço in the railway station opened in 1906 and the 1932 Fundo da Vila Fountain in Dr. Pires de Carvalho Street.
