Loulé Castle was built after the Reconquest in 1249, although the city walls date back to the Moorish Almoravid period. During the earthquake of 1755 the castle suffered severely and the remaining courtyard, houses, three towers and a turret were restored in the 20th century. Two of the three towers stand between modern houses. The three towers and connecting walls are open to the public, although the inner rooms can only be viewed through glass doors. Remains of the defensive walls can be found in Rua da Barbacã, Largo da Matriz and Rua Rainha D. Leonor.
