Lorvão Monastery is one of the oldest in Europe and is located about 16 km northeast of Coimbra. Although some date it as 6th century, it is now generally accepted that it is from the 9th century following the Christian Reconquest of Coimbra in 878. The church was built between 1748 and 1761 and the present appearance results from rebuilding carried out in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Renaissance cloister is surrounded by thirteen empty 17th century chapels and the convent buildings house a psychiatric hospital. An interesting museum exhibits 17th and 18th century paintings, ceramics, furniture and a tapestry collection.
