Approximately 7 km north of Leiria is the village of Milagres and its fine baroque church, a place of pilgrimage. Legend has it that in 1728 a man suffering from paralysis, Manuel Francisco Mayo, was miraculously cured here and subsequently erected a commemorative plaque. As news of this spread, other believers visited the site and the church was built with the aid of their gifts; as a result Milagres village developed. The azulejo tiles in the church tell the story of the miracle and date from 1795. The traditional Lord of the Miracles procession takes place in September each year.
