Lisbon’s botanical garden is regarded as one of Europe’s finest. Designed in the mid 19th century as a scientific garden for the University of Lisbon, it was inaugurated in 1878 and covers approximately 10 acres. The collections of palms and cycads are notable highlights and the garden is also particularly rich in tropical species from South America, Australia and New Zealand. Pleasant walks can be enjoyed amongst the plants from all over the world. The gardens are enhanced by streams and some modern statues.
