The charming town of Linhares da Beira, on the western slopes of the Serra da Estrela, is 34 km west of Guarda. It is the hometown of the Iberian Lusitanian tribe, from whom the Portuguese believe they have descended. Linhares was given its charter by Afonso Henriques in 1169. The two crenellated towers and the perimeter walls of the 13th century castle stand proudly above the town. The Romanesque parish church, rebuilt in the 17th century, has three paintings by the great Portuguese painter Vasco Fernandes, better known as Grão Vasco. The forum and 16th century pillory have also survived.
