Located in the frontier village of Lindoso, 25 km northwest of Ponte da Barca, Lindoso castle played an important role in the defence of Portugal through the centuries. Built originally by Afonso Henriques in the 12th century, it was rebuilt by King Dinis in 1287; now restored it houses an art gallery. Lindoso is also a good place to view the many 18th and 19th century espigueiros; these are granaries, designed like a tomb with an ornamental cross and built in wood or granite. They have ventilation slots and are raised off the ground.
