With Leira raised to city status in 1545 by King João III, construction of the Mannerist-style cathedral began in 1546 under architect Afonso Álvares. Changes, particularly as a result of the 1755 earthquake, have resulted in a more sombre façade, with only the three entrance doors of the original remaining. The 17th century main chapel by Baltasar Álvares and Brother João Turriano is a highlight, its altarpiece paintings by Simão Rodrigues depicting episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary. It is interesting that the cathedral bell is located a nearby on the site of the former Portas do Sol medieval tower.
