Together with castles at Pombal, Ourém and Tomar, the imposing Leiria castle was a key part of the central Portuguese defensive system. Its history includes the Romans, Moors and the days of early Portugal. In 1324 King Dinis built a royal residence for himself and Queen Isabel of Aragon and restored the castle; they lived here for long periods. Damaged during the French invasions in the 19th century, the castle was restored by Swiss architect Ernesto Korrodi and ‘The Friends of the Castle’ in the 20th century’. Today it houses a library and reading rooms and hosts cultural events.
