The large beach of Leça da Palmeira has strong breaking waves, making excellent conditions for surfing, body boarding and kite surfing, particularly at the north end and the adjoining Aterro beach. Those preferring calmer waters can swim in the saltwater swimming pool, designed by leading Portuguese architect Siza Vieira, who was also responsible for the delightful nearby Boa Nova teahouse and restaurant built in the 1960s. There are lifeguards on duty in season, facilities for the disabled and parking is available. The average summer seawater temperature is 16 ºC, there are plenty of bars and restaurants and umbrellas can be hired.
