Located about 8 km southeast of Sintra is the home, from 1930 until his death, of painter, caricaturist and Republican activist Leal da Câmara (1876-1948). His violent criticism of church and monarchy cost him his work with magazines such as ‘A Marselhesa’, ‘Corja’ and ‘O Diabo’ and he left Portugal in 1898 returning only after the establishment of the Republic in 1910. He was, at one stage, caricaturist for the Paris newspaper L’Assiette au Beurre. The museum contains many of his oil paintings, water colours, drawings, pastels, charcoal drawings as well as furniture, azulejos, table lamps and ceramics designed by him.
