This important architectural site dates from the 10th century, when a mixed sex convent was established by the Order of St Benedict. In the 12th century it became the headquarters of the Knights of Malta in Portugal. The fortress style church seen today is from the 14th century rebuild under Brother Estevão Vasques Pimentel. The Gothic façade has a rose window and a Templar cross. The wedding of King Ferdinand I and Leonor Teles de Menezes took place here in 1371. Notable items include the 1514 baptismal font by Diogo Pires the Younger and the cross outside dating from 1513.
