The Leça da Palmeira Fort was built after the restoration of Portuguese independence in 1640. It formed part of a line of defence, which included the forts of São João da Foz and São Francisco de Xavier to the south. Also known as Matosinhos Castle or the Fortress of Nossa Senhora das Neves (Our Lady of Purity), it was taken out of military service in the 18th century. Used by customs from 1844 and the secretary of the Port of Leixões from 1899, the star shaped fortress, featuring corbelled lookout points, currently houses the offices of the port captain.
