Approximately 5 km southwest of Monção, on the left bank of the River Minho, is Lapela, a small town clustered around an ancient defensive tower. King Afonso Henriques, who became the first king of Portugal, ordered Lourenço de Abreu to build a castle here in 1130. Two centuries later, during the reign of King Ferdinand (1367-1383), the keep, the present Lapela tower, was added. The coat of arms above the main entrance is that of Ferdinand. In 1706 King João V ordered the rest of the fortress to be demolished, to provide stone to reinforce Monção castle.
