Lamego has one of the best regional museums in Portugal, which is housed in the former 18th century bishop’s palace, from which it inherited many items of its collection. The highlight of the museum’s exhibits are the five remaining altar panels, by Grão Vasco (1475-1542) and, in particular, that depicting the Creation of the Animals. These formed part of a series of 20 panels used in the cathedral. The outstanding Flemish tapestries on display are also from the 16th century and include a vivid life of Oedipus. With so many fascinating items to be seen, this museum should not be missed.
