Founded in 1129 by Afonso Henriques, the imposing Gothic Lamegro Cathedral has been considerably altered over the years, particularly in the 16th to 18th centuries. Only the square tower remains of the original. The final mixture of architectural styles, including Manueline, works well. Highlights include the Renaissance cloister and chapels from the 16th century and the painted vaulted ceilings depicting scenes from the Old Testament, for which Nicolau Nasoni received the commission in 1738. There is also a fine 18th century marble and gilt altarpiece and two organs from 1753.
