Situated at the highest point of the city, Lamego Castle dates from the 12th century. Still intact are two gates, the Porta dos Fogos and the Porta do Sol, the keep, which was used as the town hall in the 16th and 17th centuries, and parts of the 13th century town wall. There is also a Moorish cistern, the largest yet discovered in Portugal, with the monograms of the master masons who built it. Tradition has it that the soul of a Moorish maid returns to the tower to weep on foggy days.
