Lajes is a picturesque town and fishing port, surrounded by green fields. Due to its natural harbour, Lajes was one of the first settlements on the island and received its town charter already in 1515, long before Santa Cruz. Lajes was a good base for whale fishing and the industry flourished until the end of 1981. The former whaling factory is being converted to a whale museum. The 18th century chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary was built by Spanish nobles who were saved after a galleon wreck. There is an attractive beach and, just outside town, an imposing lighthouse is worth viewing.
