The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário was built in the 16th century and it was enlarged in the 17th century. The church houses a remarkable collection of sculptures from the 18th century, created by the Portuguese artist Machado de Castro. He was a celebrated figure throughout Europe in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His finest work, the equestrian statue of D. José I, was erected in 1775 as part of the rebuilding of central Lisbon after the disastrous earthquake of 1755.
