The baroque Monastery and Church of São Francisco dates from the 17th century. The chronicler Frei Agostinho de Mont’Alverne lived here in the 17th and 18th centuries. The building has reliquaries and statues dating from the same period. Until 1832 the now extinct Franciscan religious order was responsible for the town’s education. This convent has recently been restored and converted into a tourism unit and also into a cultural centre. The museum exhibits rare pieces and ancient maps. The attached chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosário is decorated with priceless items like mermaids in gold relief and images of Santo António, Senhor Santo Cristo and Santa Luzia.
