The Lagoa do Caldeirão on the island of Corvo is situated in Monte Gordo in a gigantic crater. Made up of two irregularly shaped lakes Lagoa do Caldeirão, tips appearing above the water appear to resemble seven of the nine islands of the Azores in the form of small cones of volcanic ash. From the rim of the Caldeirão crater it is possible to follow the footpath down to the lakes.
