The Lace Museum was established in 1991 in the 18th century Casa do Vinhal, which also houses the school of lace-making, one of the largest technical institutions in Portugal. Vila do Conde is an important centre of this craft and in particular the world famous Bilros (bone) lace, a traditional 16th century skill. The museum, where lace workers can be seen displaying their expertise, contains exhibits of materials, tools, traditional and contemporary local lace and examples from all over Europe and Brazil. Products can be bought here or at the nearby Centro de Artesanato.
