The King João VI Equestrian Statue dominates the Praça Gonçalves Zarco, named after the man who discovered Madeira. Created by Portuguese sculptor Salvador Carvão da Silva D’Eça Barata Feyo (1899-1990) it was inaugurated in 1966. The monument comprises a granite base and a bronze statue of King João VI on a horse in motion. With the reins in his left hand, the right supports a globe, symbolizing the creation of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarve in 1816. This monument is adjacent to the São Francisco Xavier Fort known as the Castelo do Queijo (see separate entry).
