The bronze equestrian statue located in the corner of the Praça da Figueira is of King John I of Portugal (1385-1433), the first king of the house of Aviz. He came to the throne after the battle of Aljubarota and the medallions on the base are of Nuno Álvares Pereira, an accomplished general and João das Regras, a jurist, both key characters in his ascent to the throne. Known as ‘The Good’ his reign was characterised by achievement and peace, other than conquest of Ceuta in 1415. The statue is by Leopoldo de Almeida and was erected in 1971.
