No visit to Setubal is complete without tasting its famous fragrant dessert wine, Moscatel de Setubal. The region also produces good quality red table wines. The José Maria da Fonseca winery and museum is in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, about 20 kms west of Setubal in the Serra da Arrábida. A visit includes a tour of the winery where the process of making muscatel is explained, a visit to old cellars containing massive chestnut and oak vats and tasting of the wine. José Maria da Fonseca is a family owned business which has been making wine since 1834.
