The José Malhoa Museum is housed in the first dedicated museum building in Portugal. Designed by the architects Paulino Montês (1897-1962) and Eugénio Correia (1897-1985), it is an interesting example of Portuguese modernist architecture. Inaugurated in 1940, it replaced the temporary museum opened in 1933. The museum is dedicated to Portuguese Naturalist painting, centred on the work of local artist José Malhoa (1855-1933) and the Grupo do Leão, a circle of painters to which Malhoa belonged. There are also sections on ceramics, the work of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro and statuary represented by Francisco Franco and Leopoldo de Almeida.
