The library was built in the early 18th century and named after its benefactor King João V, his coat of arms is over the entrance. It is sumptuous in the extreme and one of the outstanding sights of Coimbra. Over 300,000 volumes, from the 16th to 18th centuries, are stored here on ornate gilded wood shelves, the work of Manuel da Silva. The library is divided into three rooms by identical ornate arches. The trompe l´oeil effect ceilings are by António Simões Ribeiro and Vicente Nunes. The library tables, containing silver inkwells, are in exotic woods from former Portuguese colonies.
