The Júlio Dinis Monument was inaugurated in December 1926 and is the work of sculptor Joăo Silva. Júlio Dinis was the pseudonym of Joaquim Guilherme Gomes Coelho (1839-1871), a Portuguese doctor and writer who is regarded as the first great novelist of the Portuguese middle classes. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 31. His mother was English and in 1868 he published a novel ‘An English Family’ describing English society in Porto. The monument depicts a feminine figure laying a wreath of flowers next to the poet’s bust. The plinth is decorated with a bas-relief ‘The family reading’.
