The best way in which to enjoy the Jewish Quarter of Castelo de Vide is on foot. The medieval layout of the streets is preserved, as are the names from earlier times: Rua da Judiaria (Street of Jews), Rua Nova (New Street), where Jews converting to Christianity lived and Rua do Arçário (Street of Arcades), the merchant’s street. On the doors that retain their ogival gothic structure, there are sculpted symbols. At the crossroads between Rua da Judiaria and Rua da Fonte there is the former synagogue. In the 16th century, when Jews were expelled, it became a residence.
