The cemetery was created for the Jewish community who returned to Faro in the early 1830s after fleeing the Inquisition some centuries earlier. Most of them came back from Gibraltar and Morocco. There are graves dating back to 1838. The cemetery served the prosperous community until 1932, by which time the community had all left: there is no Jewish community in Faro today. The cemetery and buildings were restored in 1992/93 and 18 cypress trees were planted in honour of Portuguese humanitarian Aristides de Sousa Mendes. More recently a Synagogue Museum has been established.
