A UNESCO World Heritage site, this Hieronymite monastery was built in the early 16th century by King Manuel I. Commemorating Vasco da Gama’s successful voyage to India, hiomb was laid to rest inside the entrance. Others buried here include Portugal’s most famous writer Luis de Camóes and Kings Manuel and Sebastião. Notable features are the carved columns to the cloisters, the relief decoration to the octagonal piers to the church, the sea motives featured throughout, and the hedged garden with a large fountain.
