The tiny Islet of Romeiro, only accessible by boat from nearby São Lourenço, is one of Santa Maria’s more interesting attractions. The beauty of the islet consists of an interesting grotto full of stalactites and stalagmites. The grotto has an intriguing mooring area for boats made from the volcanic material which has formed a natural interior pier. The cavern is massive and well worth visiting. It can be very cool inside the cavern, so some warmer clothing is recommended.
