The mouth of the Minho (Foz do Minho) lies 5 kms southwest of Caminha, and from here you can arrange for local fishermen to take you across to the ruin of the island fortress of Insua. The fort was originally built at the time of the Reconquest and remodelled by King Manuel. It was later further renovated by King John IV in the 17th Century. The island is rocky and the fort houses a former Franciscan monastery and church. There are still five bastions remaining, as well as a small cloister and a chapel.
