The Praça Infante Dom Henrique is a pretty square with a statue of Prince Henry the Navigator looking out to sea taking pride of place. At the back of the square, on the left hand side, is the Igreja da Santa Maria, which dates from the early 16th century, although it was modified in the 18th and 19th centuries. On the opposite side of the square is the ’Slave Market’ from the 15th century, where slaves brought back from the discovery voyages were sold. The square can be a good starting point to explore Lagos, or simply a great place to sit and people watch.
