Impérios do Espírito Santo are tiny chapels honouring the Holy Ghost. These small buildings are scattered throughout the island. With fantastic shapes and bright colours, they are one of the most interesting forms of typical Azorean architecture. The Império do Espírito Santo in Casa da Ribeira is situated next to the church in the plaza. Built in the 15th century and reconstructed in the 19th century, it is home to some notable religious statues from the 16th and 18th centuries.
