Ilhéu de Monchique lies about 1.5 km off the northwest coast of Flores. This tiny rock islet is no longer the important marker that it once was, but it still has a claim to fame in being the most western point in Europe. Once, during the period of navigation by astronomy, the island was an essential point of reference for the verification and calibration of the navigation instruments of ships. From the Ilhéu de Monchique until reaching America, there is nothing apart from the Atlantic.
