The 17th century Baroque Misericórdia church is generally accepted to be the best in Chaves and has an exquisite interior. It is said that it was the chapel of the Dukes of Brangança. On the façade is a carving of Our Lady of Mercy looking down on ten figures and covering them with her mantle. The interior walls are covered with 18th century azulejo panels, attributed to Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes, portraying New Testament scenes. Also of interest is the painted ceiling by Jeronimo Rocha Braga depicting the Visitation and the extravagantly decorated retable.
