This church was built between 1531 and 1547 on the site where a small chapel dedicated to São Sebastião had previously existed. It was built in a Portuguese Gothic style and is decorated in the exterior with some very interesting Manueline details. The church’s sacristy is decorated with tiles and 17th century furniture in jacaranda. One can also admire a priceless collection of vestments embroidered in gold on tapestry. This is Ponta Delgada’s main church among the many places of worship with which this city is endowed its high tower, the only one in the city, which has a clock, can be seen from far.
