The Parish Church of Santa Cruz was founded in 1456 by Jácome de Bruges, the first Governor of the island. It was only completed in 1517. Although it underwent extensive renovations in the 19th century, the Church still preserves vestiges of its original Manueline style, as may be seen in the beautifully adorned Gothic main portal, whose arcade is composed of five vaults, a gift from King Manuel I. This church also has a Manueline lateral doorway. Key features of the interior encompass an important collection of 16th century and 17th-century statues, including a rare polychrome ivory Indo Portuguese sculpture.
