The Parish Church of Santa Catarina in Calheta was built in the 18th century on the site of an earlier chapel. Particularly noteworthy are the masonry doorways, decorated in Baroque style, the high altar with carved gilded woodwork and two valuable statues of the patron saint, Santa Catarina. One of these dates from the 17th century and the other is earlier. Also not to be missed is the mortuary chapel with golden engraved wood carvings and a very interesting candlestick.
