The parish Church of Cacela Velha was dedicated to Our Lady. Built in the 13th century, after the Christian Reconquest of the Algarve region, only the small side gothic doorway remains from the original structure. The current church is dated the 16th century. An impressive renaissance entranceway opens into the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires (Our Lady of the Martyrs). As well as the Manueline decoration of the interior, there is much embellishment with spheres and ropes.
