On the west side of the Cathedral is the curiously named church of Grilos, so called as this was name by which the barefoot Augustinian monks with their brown habits were known; grilos being the Portuguese for crickets. Built in the Mannerist style as a Jesuit seminary church by Baltazar Alvarés, it was sold to the Augustinians in 1780 following the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portugal. Construction started in the late 16th century and continued until 1709 when the impressive façade was finally completed. Internally gilt carving and a beautiful panel in neo-classical style are worthy of notice.
