The large mid 17th century Igreja do Seminário, which serves as Santarém’s cathedral, is also known as Nossa Senhora da Conceição. It was designed by Mateus do Couto on the orders of King João IV for the Jesuit community and built on the site of a royal palace. Its Mannerist façade is multi-windowed and features niches sheltering statues of saints. The vast interior has painted wooden ceilings, azulejo panels, and much gilt and marble ornamentation. Note the marble inlays to the altar, which are the work of Carlos Baptista Garvo and typical of the period.
