Built on the site of a 15th century church, the current building dates from the 17th century. The interior is outstanding, beautifully finished with tiles and gold-leafed carving. Of particular interest are the 17th century "ears of corn" tiles, the retable on the main altar dating from the reign of Pedro II (1683-1706), the carved lateral altars in gold leaf from the reign of João V (1706-50) and the paintings by Évora painter, Francisco Nunes Varela, between 1665-67, as well as the canvas paintings dating from the second half of the 18th century which decorate the main chapel.
