A National Monument, the Manueline-style St Peter’s Church situated beyond the Rua 9 de Abril, was rebuilt in the 16th century. Its striking portal exhibits Renaissance influences with the coat of arms of Dom João III and his wife Dona Catarina and a winged dragon, whilst the door dates from 1712. The interior features painted ceilings and tiled panels from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries in various styles and an 18th century rocaille organ. The tomb of João Lopes Perestelo, who accompanied Vasco da Gama on his voyage to India, rests here.
