The Church of São Mateus (Saint Matthew) was originally built in the 16th century, but underwent several alterations and extensions until it was completely reconstructed in the 19th century. Its interior houses a remarkable wood-carved high altar, some beautiful lateral altars and a few magnificent paintings from the 16th and 17th century, some of them from the Flemish school. Worthy of note are the 16th century Flemish statues of St. Matthew and St. Peter. Another notable feature is an interesting cupboard organ from the late 18th century. Adjacent to the Igreja de São Mateus is a chapel dedicated to the Holy Ghost.
