The Church of São José was part of a former Franciscan convent, which was adapted into a hospital in the mid 19th century. The original building dates from the 16th century and was reconstructed in 1709 to include a church porch and three layers of windows. The façade includes five bas-reliefs depicting steps in the life of São Francisco, limestone sculptures and a basalt statue of the patron saint in a niche. The interior includes a set of decorative items, representative of 18th-century art. Adjoining to the left stands the chapel Nossa Senhora das Dores, which was added later and is a perfect example of Baroque architecture on the Azores.
