The Igreja de São Jorge was the first church to be built on the island and was commissioned in the will of Infante Dom Henrique (1394-1460). The church contains a 16th century altarpiece offered by King D. Sebastião and a painting of Our Lady with the Child; a side altar with the figure of the Saintly Sacrament carved in basaltic masonry and two pulpits of rock. There is an organ that dates from 1865 constructed by Tomé Gregorio de Lacerda, uncle of the famous compositor Francisco de Lacerda.
