The Igreja de São João Baptista was built at the beginning of the 16th century by the architect Cristóvão de Almeida. Simple in structure, it has an extremely beautiful carved doorway, with twisted columns and typically Manueline motifs in the armillary spheres placed either side of the shield of Portugal. Inside, where the Manueline decorative features are repeated on the capitals, visitors should be sure to admire the 16th-century marble pulpit and the azulejos lining the walls of the chancel. This church, which is now classified as a National Monument, is an excellent example of the Manueline artistic style.
